    How To Speak To A Live Person

    When contacting your local SSA office in Portland, you may be directed to a prerecorded message or an auto-response bot. In many cases, you will need to speak to a live agent.

    In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. This new federal legislature started the collecting of taxes in 1937. Since then, working citizens across the United States began paying into social security in order to have a form of guaranteed income once they reached retirement age.

    • Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills with an attention to details and the ability to gather information through interviews.

    • Ability to acquire and understand large and complex information sets.

    • Ability to interpret federal and state laws and regulations around Social Security Administration and other benefits programs.

    • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with disabilities.
