Sign In To Office 365 and Stay Signed In

You can enable users to sign into Office 365 using one of the following methods:

  • Secure Web Authentication
  • WS-Federation – Automatic
  • WS-Federation – Manual

SWA is a single sign-on method developed by Okta. It stores the end-user credentials using strong encryption combined with a customer-specific private key. When the end-user clicks the app, Okta securely signs them in using the encrypted credentials.

WS-Federation defines mechanisms to transfer identity information using encrypted SOAP messages. It does not require a separate password for Office 365.

Personal Vs Work Or School

Microsoft provide two types of accounts. Theres Personal Accounts and theres Work or School accounts. Unfortunately these arent the only two names that these accounts go by. Personal Accounts are also called Live IDs or Microsoft Accounts. Work or School accounts are also known as Office 365 accounts, Organisational accounts or even Azure Active Directory accounts. But basically, Personal accounts are accounts for consumers and you use them to log into consumer level services like the regular Skype, or Xbox Live or Outlook.com. Work or School accounts are accounts that are given to you by your work or school. And youll primarily use them to sign into the Office 365 services.

The tricky part is, these two accounts can be used to log into the same applications and services, and you can have the same email address associated with both types of accounts which is the case with mine.

I have signed up for a Microsoft account, or a Personal Account, with my Work or School email, and I also have an Office 365 account. So when I put my email address in, occasionally it will say Work or School, or Personal account? And If youve signed up for a Personal Microsoft account using your work or school email and you also have Office 365 for work or school, youll probably see this too.

Your Office 365 Account = Your Identity

Office 365 works best when everybody in the team has an Office 365 account and your account is everything to you in Office 365, its your identity, and when it comes to working in the cloud, your identity and the security of that identity is really important. It doesnt matter if you share mailboxes, or files, or responsibilities with another person, because that can all be accounted for and easily configured. The bottom line is, having your own Office 365 login is essential.

Configure Single Sign On Using Ws

There are two ways of configuring WS-Federation: automatic and using PowerShell. You can allow Okta to automatically configure WS-Federation or you can manually configure it using customized PowerShell script provided by Okta. Configuring WS-Federation automatically is recommended because Okta takes care of the back-end procedures.

Configure Single Sign on using WS-Federation – automatic method

  • Go to Office 365 > Sign on > Settings > Edit.
  • In Sign on Methods, select WS-Federation > Automatic.
  • Enter your Office 365 Administrator Username and Password.
  • Select domains that you want to federate.
  • Ensure your administrator credentials for the Office 365 are NOT in the domain you are federating.

    This will lock you out of the Office 365 domain. You wont be able to authenticate yourself in Microsoft 365 Admin Center as you have to authenticate through Okta, where you will be treated as a user, not as an admin. Ensure you are using administrator credentials for an account that is on your default Office 365 domain. This domain is by default yourtenant.onmicrosoft.com.

    Configure Single Sign on using WS-Federation – PowerShell method

  • Go to Office 365 > Sign on > Settings > Edit.
  • In Sign on Methods, select WS-Federation > Manual using PowerShell.
  • Copy this command for use in PowerShell.
  • In PowerShell,

  • Enter your Office 365 Global Administrator username and password.
  • Enter the copied customized PowerShell command.
  • Ensure the federation is successful by entering this command:

    Tip: To manage your account profile after signing in select your picture or name in the upper-right corner of the window, and select the option to view or manage your account.

    For Office apps installed on a Windows PC:

  • If you’re not already in an Office file or document, open an app such as Word or Excel, and open an existing file, or create a new one.

  • Select File> Account . If you’re not already signed in, click Sign In.

  • In the Sign in window, type the email address and password you use with Office. This might be the personal Microsoft account you associated with Office, or the username and password you use with your work or school account.

  • For Office apps installed on a Mac:

  • Open any Office app such as Word and select Sign In. If you’re already editing a file, go to File> New from Template…> Sign In.

    Note: If you’re on OneNote, select OneNote from the top menu and then select Sign In.

  • In the Sign in window, type the email address and password you use with Office. This might be the personal Microsoft account you associated with Office, or the username and password you use with your work or school account.

  • For Office apps installed on an iPhones and iPads:

  • Open the Office app. On the Account screen, tap Sign In.

  • On the Sign In screen, type the email address and password you use with Office. This might be the personal Microsoft account you associated with Office, or the username and password you use with your work or school account.

    Configure Single Sign On Using Secure Web Authentication

    You can enable users to sign into Office 365 using either SWA or WS-Federation. When possible, use WS-Federation because it is more secure than SWA.

  • Go to Office 365 > Sign on > Settings > Edit.

    Signing In To Your Office 365 Account

    To sign in to your Office 365 account, proceed as follows.

    Note:If you don’t know your Office 365 username and password then contact the person who manages your IT services to obtain these details before continuing.

  • Open your web browser and go to the sign-in page at Office 365 sign-in.
  • Enter your Office 365 username or, if your Office 365 username is already visible on the sign-in page, then simply click on the username.
  • If prompted, enter your password.
  • Your Office 365 account opens.

    In the example above, Office 365 opened on the Outlook Mail application. To access other applications, click on the application menu in the top left hand corner of the display, then click on the required application icon to open it.

    Note:The options available to you in the applications menu depend on the particular Office 365 subscription you have chosen to purchase.

    Your old email account will have been migrated to Office 365 and may be accessed by signing into your Office 365, Outlook on the web, account at .

    Sign In To My Microsoft 365 Account

    Sign in to access your Microsoft 365 account. Bookmark the sign-in page for easy access from your browser.

    Note: If you try to sign in to your account through Microsoft directly , you’ll be prompted to enter your email address and then select Next before following the steps below.

  • Go to the Microsoft 365 sign-in page.
  • You can also sign in to your email using your domain name. For example, if your domain is coolexample.com, your email sign-in page would be email.coolexample.com. Customize your branded sign-in page.
  • Enter your Microsoft 365 email address and password. Your GoDaddy username and password won’t work here.
  • Select Sign In. You might need to select your account type as Work or school, not Personal, before continuing.
  • The Office home page will open. On the leftmost side, select a Microsoft app to open it .

    Signing In And Out Of Office 365

    You are able to sign in on up to five devices at one time , so it is important to remember to sign out should you wish to use Office on more than five computers.

    After launching Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint or any other Office application, sign in by following these steps.

  • At the first splash screen, select Sign In.
  • Enter your University Username followed by @uoa.auckland.ac.nz and click Next.
  • Enter your Username and Password and click Sign in.
  • You will now be able to use the application.
  • To sign out of Office 365 applications, follow these steps.

  • In the Office 365 application, click on File in the top menu bar.
  • In the File menu, select Account and then Sign out.
  • Click Yes to confirm the logout.
  • You can also Sign out of an Office 365 application allocated to a device via the Office 365 online portal.

  • Sign in using the instructions above.
  • Select Install Status from the left menu.
  • Select Deactivate on the device you wish to deactivate.
  • Click Yes to confirm the deactivation.

    Once your admin enables your organization, and your account, for multi-factor authentication you have to set up your user account to use it. This should only take a minute or so.

  • Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your work or school account with your password like you normally do. After you choose Sign in, you’ll be prompted for more information.

  • The default authentication method is to use the free Microsoft Authenticator app. If you have it installed on your mobile device, select Next and follow the prompts to add this account. If you don’t have it installed there is a link provided to download it.If you would rather use SMS messages sent to your phone instead, select I want to set up a different method. Microsoft 365 will ask for your mobile number, then send you an SMS message containing a 6-digit code to verify your device.

    Tip: For a faster, and more secure, experience we recommend using an authenticator app rather than SMS verification.
