Louisianans can now verify car titles online

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles website can be difficult to navigate, especially for first-time drivers. With that in mind, we have produced this web page, which was specifically designed to give minors all the information they will need in order to start driving. If at any point, you have questions that would require more detail, there are links to additional resources provided at the bottom of this page. In January, 2011, Louisiana changed its driver education system. It is now one among many graduated driver programs, which are becoming more and more popular in the United States. Each state has its own particular standards, educational requirements, and so on, but the basic idea is the same. There are now three major steps to take for new drivers who want an unrestricted license.

The first of these is the Class E Learners Permit. In order to qualify for a Permit, you need to be at least 15, and you need to have completed a driver education course. When arranging for a class, be sure that the course is approved by the Department of Education or the Department of Public Safety & Corrections.

You will also need to bring a parent or guardian who will sign the application with you. This is an absolute must, as someone is required to take financial responsibility for your actions on the road. The individual must be able to trust that you will take your new responsibilities seriously.

Louisiana Registration/license Plate Renewal Fees

LA registration renewal fees are based on the purchase price of your vehicle. You will be charged .1% annually on the value of the vehicle with a minimum vehicle value of $10,000. The minimum registration/license plate fee you will pay is $20. These fees are paid every 2 years, which means the annual .1% fee is doubled when you pay for 2 years.

Fees for other vehicles include:

  • Light trucks : $40 every 4 years.
  • Motorcycles: $12 every 4 years.
  • Commercial vehicles: $10 annually.
  • Motor homes: $50 every 2 years.

These fees are some of the most common, and are not a complete list. The renewal notice you receive from the OMV will list the fees you owe. The fees may also include local county fees depending on where your vehicle is registered.

You can also contact your local OMV office or the OMV help desk at 925-6146 to request information on specific vehicles.

Louisiana Office Of Motor Vehicles Update

Lake Charles, LA – Many associate the OMV with long lines and busy crowds.

But if you drive over to the OMV on main street you dont find a wait or even staff.

Youll find yourself with an empty parking lot, and the doors are locked.

The Lake Charles and Sulphur OMV field offices have been closed since Hurricane Laura of August of 2020, said public information director for the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles Matthew Boudreaux.

The buildings sustained tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage, according to Boudreaux.

Were talking about the roofs being ripped off, and once that happens, then all the computers inside the technology in there are ruined, he said.

A year later, some are wondering if and when they will reopen.

Were working very hard with the necessary people to get it reopened as soon as we can, he said. The Sulphur location is going to be moving to a new location from where it was previously due to the amount of damage sustained from the hurricane.

While he couldnt give us a timeline or a reopening date, Boudreaux says they are close.

We dont want to open too soon and have to go back and you know, with technology, a lot of things have to happen, he said. Its not just plugging in some computers and saying, lets open. Theres a lot of different things that go into it even after the structural repairs are complete. So were very hopeful in the coming weeks or months to open up Lake Charles.
